The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary (Kostol Nanebovzatia Panny Márie) is a 14th-century Gothic parish church sitting in the center of Radničné Square. It is famous for its towering 87-meter neo-Gothic spire, which is the tallest church tower in Slovakia.
What to Look For
- The Southern Portal: Before entering, look at this rich Gothic entryway on the south facade. In the archway (tympanum), you will find one of the oldest stone reliefs in Slovakia, depicting the coronation of the Virgin Mary.
- Master Paul of Levoča Sculptures: Inside, locate the late-Gothic Calvary group of sculptures, crafted by the workshop of Master Paul, the region's legendary medieval woodcarver.
- The Bronze Baptismal Font: A highly decorated medieval font dating back to 1349, cast by Master Konrád.
- The Tower Climb: Climb the 155 steps up the historic tower for panoramic views of the town square and the High Tatras. On the way up, you will pass five massive bells and the inner workings of the tower’s clock.
Practicalities
Access to the tower is managed separate from the church interior. You must book or buy your tower ticket through the Tourist Information Center (Turistické informačné centrum) located nearby on Letná Street.
